From the Peace Park, we walked up through the Hondori arcade (shade!) to Hiroshima Castle.

The Carp Castle
It’s called the Carp Castle, and yes, that’s where the baseball team got its name. The original keep was from the 1590s and survived for 350 years, until the atomic bomb in 1945, which flattened it along with everything else. The one standing now was rebuilt in concrete in 1958, so it’s not one of the 12 originals, but it looks the part.

Inside
Inside, it’s a museum, with a reconstructed samurai house and kitchen, and photos of the castle before and after the bomb. There’s also a castle mascot, for some reason.

Another Coin
And yes, there’s a coin machine. Not one of the 12 originals, so it goes into the bonus pile, next to Nagoya and Osaka.

Lunch, then something completely different: the Mazda Museum.
Information About Hiroshima Castle
About 15 minutes' walk north of the Peace Park. The keep was rebuilt in concrete in 1958, so it's a museum inside, not an original.
