Getting There
The shop is right smack in the city centre of Aomori. There’s no reason why you would be taking any other mode of transport except walking. It takes about 5 mins from the gates of JR Aomori Station. Be sure to check out the fresh produce stalls along the way. Aomori is known for apples, and have touted themselves as best in Japan. Be sure to grab an apple along the way! Also, be sure to check out the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE right beside the train station for some immersive cultural experience!
An Amazing Lunch at Horoka, Japanese Buckwheat Soba
As we stepped into the shop, we were greeted by a walkway filled with wooden pillars. I would imagine that it is a very popular shop because there were seats along this walkway. Surprising it was 12pm and yet the restaurant was empty. Perhaps it was winter and nobody wanted to get outside. The interior of the restaurant was very cosy too! As with all Japanese restaurants, you wouldn’t expect the seating capacity to be huge. Hence the waiting chairs outside.
And of course the restaurant is a specialty shop, they only sold hot or cold soba, or a combo of rice with soba. The toppings are really the only thing you could choose, which is largely tempura style. Needless to say, while at a soba shop, we got to have soba. We took a hot and cold one, so that we could get a taste of the best of both worlds. What’s more, the total bill added up to 2,080 yen! It was budget friendly and yet one of the most amazing soba experience we’ve had. Thumbs up, and definitely a must-go if you are in Aomori.
