The greenhouse
After lunch, up Mt Godai to the Makino Botanical Garden (¥1,460 for two). It’s named after Tomitaro Makino, the botanist from Kōchi who named over 1,500 Japanese plants.

The hillside
Outside, the garden spreads over the hill, with lookouts over Kōchi.

Dr Makino
The museum has his botanical drawings and a copy of his study, piled high with books and specimens.

Gyu-Kaku
Our hotel in Kōchi was JR Clement Inn, by the station (parking ¥2,000). Laundry night (¥500).

Dinner was Gyu-Kaku, the yakiniku chain. Not very local, but very good. ¥4,279.

Onward to Iya Valley!
