Up early, again
Bali is a short hop from Singapore, but short hops still mean early flights. Breakfast was at the airport before 5am, and we touched down at Ngurah Rai around 9.30am. Bonus: Bali is on the same clock as Singapore, so no jet lag to complain about.

A Grab from the airport took about an hour and a half up to Ubud, most of it in traffic. That’s normal for Bali, so don’t plan anything tight on arrival day.
The Udaya
Our home for the four nights was The Udaya Resorts & Spa, a little north of Ubud town and away from the noise. The lobby is all high ceilings and dark wood, and the welcome drinks came with a pair of koi fish for company.

The grounds are the main event. Streams, ponds, stone statues and tropical plants everywhere, with the rooms tucked between them.

Even the corridors have orchids.

Lunch on the terrace
Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we had lunch at Deeva, the resort restaurant, looking out over the gardens. Sate, nasi goreng with a fried egg on top, and a few small plates of sambal and pickles. A good first meal.

Proof that we were both there:

The room
The room had a four-poster bed with a white canopy and a big standalone bathtub with a carved stone wall behind it. Very Bali.

Outside, the koi pond and the gardens, which we’d walk through every day for the next four days. Then we headed into town.

Onward to Ubud town!
