Breakfast at Kamuroan

Breakfast at Kamuroan, and this was our third stay with them, after Osaka and Kyoto in 2018 and the Yuzawa trip in January 2024. Every time it feels less like checking in at an inn and more like coming home to relatives who happen to run a very good breakfast. The okami was as warm and welcoming as ever.

This time her husband sat down with us for photos too.

Kennin-ji

Then a walk to Kennin-ji, Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, around ¥800 each.

It has the famous Wind God and Thunder God screens, and a dry garden you can sit and look at.

The Dharma hall ceiling has two huge dragons painted on it, twisting around each other.

You end up standing with your neck bent right back, trying to get both of them in one shot.

Gion

Out through Gion and down Hanamikoji, the old teahouse street. A Tully’s to keep going.

Then a bus up the east side of town to Ginkaku-ji.

Postcard from Gion, Kyoto

Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, founded in 1202, a short walk south of Gion. Home of the Wind God and Thunder God screens and the twin dragon ceiling painted in 2002 for its 800th birthday. Entry ¥800.

PS: The screens on show are high-resolution copies; the originals are in the Kyoto National Museum. The dragons are the real thing.
