Back in Sendai

After the foxes at Zao Fox Village and the afternoon at Shiroishi Castle, we took the local train back up to Sendai. We still had two very important missions before dinner: try Sendai’s famous green drink, and find the Rilakkuma store.

The Random Green Drink: Zunda Shake

Sendai’s local sweet is zunda, a paste made from mashed edamame beans and sugar. It goes on mochi, into cakes, and at Zunda Saryo, into a milkshake. The shop is right inside Sendai Station, and of course there was a queue.

The zunda shake is a vanilla shake blended with zunda. Yes, it’s green, and yes, it’s made of beans. Sounds weird, but it’s sweet and creamy with a little bit of a bean taste, kinda like a red bean dessert but greener. We get why everyone’s queuing.

Our Rilakkuma Tradition

Every holiday, we go looking for a Rilakkuma shop or café wherever we are. So far there’s been Rilakkuma Sabo in Arashiyama, the Rilakkuma Café in Taipei and the Rilakkuma store in Nagoya. Sendai has a Rilakkuma Store too, right by the station, so of course Minmin found it.

Inside is everything Rilakkuma: plushies of every size, stationery, snacks, and a whole wall of mugs, one for each letter of the alphabet.

They also had glass cases of tiny Rilakkuma figurine sets, each one a little scene. Even I have to admit they’re pretty cute.

Even the gift money envelopes come in Rilakkuma.

By the time we came out, it was dark, and Sendai Station was all lit up. Time for dinner!

Rilakkuma stores open and close over the years, so check San-X’s store list before you go.

Information About Zunda Saryo

Sendai's green drink: a vanilla shake blended with sweet edamame paste. Sounds odd, tastes like the best kind of bean dessert. Then Rilakkuma, as always.
